Papaya - Disappointment : Plums MIA

On my quest to try new foods I picked up a large and small papaya at the grocery store.  I had to ask the produce guy what they were b/c I was unsure. =)

I waited until it was nice and yellow on the outside, and this morning I cut open the small one.  Those seeds are crazy.. they are just hanging out in there like little tadpole eggs getting ready to sprout a tail.

I like to use the melon baller to take out the center seed area on fruits.  It cuts into the meat really easy, but also only takes a thin layer.  I took the seeds out then took a piece to try.

This is a tropical fruit?

Much like the cantelope that I am not really fond of either, the papaya has a very mellow and not sweet taste.  Blah.  I tried a few more bites and it was just too boring.

I wonder if the bigger one will have a different taste?

I am upset that I can't find plums anywhere.  I had my first last week and wished I had 12 more.  I have looked at four places since, and no one has plums.  I am on the hunt!

Next new food... Eggplant.

  1. Hi Lorelei! I'm really enjoying reading your blog, sounds like you are on a fascinating journey and doing a great job of it. Can't wait to meet you at Wendy and Jamie's wedding. I'm Cuban and I know a few things about tropical fruit. Papayas are sort of bland in taste, but the ones you buy at the store are going to be even more so because they are probably picked before they are ripe, but the comparison to cantelope is dead on. Keep up the good work!
